The position system provides a complete track or road layout. Just let your vehicle run over all roads and tracks while recording the positions and you will get a true drawing of your layout.
What you also get is all the places where the layout can deviate onto another road or track section. Usually these deviations are provided with various types of tunouts which can be shiftet manually or automatically.
In order to get a smooth and safe drive with many vehicles at the same time it is important to know for each vehicle what is ahead of it. GT-Command calculates many times per second which path a given vehicle is heading, and what possible obstacles, signals, signs, other vehicles etc. are ahead. The control system then adjust speed etc. in order to prevent accidents and in order to ensure correct stopping.
The intelligence behind this comes from a logical model of each type of turnout: 1) Classical deviation, right or left 2) Cross, just passing over without deviation, 2 directions 3) Cross with single pull for deviation, parallel deviation in both directions 4) Cross with double pull for deviation, can be different in opposite directions. 5) Multiple deviations, usually 3 way.
Due to the inherent logic and the graphical representation in the system the vehicles will obey rules only in the actual route.
When the vehicle is drawing the layout and finds deviations it can identify the position of the deviation and some of the turnout types. However, the user needs to verify it and make the actual connections in the track editor.
